Dale had grown up to be a fine man, although he didn't change much. He shot up like growing boys usually do, and he wasn't buff or ripped though he was decently built. His hair was still long-ish, kept but still almost in his eyes and a little bit of scruff; a five o'clock shadow. He was wearing a nice suit as he sat at his desk in his office at Social Services, finishing up some reports while waiting for Sylvie to show up to have lunch with him.

"Hey, Kid." A voice said from his open doorway. It was Kathryn Loveless, not his partner but a friend in the workplace.

"Yeah? Is Sylvie here?" He asked, not yet looking up from his computer screen.

"No, not yet. But we just got a boy from FM who could use some watching." She said.

Immediately, Dale looked up when she said 'FM,' Fort Morgan, his hometown. Kids who came into social services typically came from bad places, but Fort Morgan was a whole new ballpark. He looked over at Loveless before letting his eyes wonder down at her knee caps where a boy not much older then four or five stood; holding onto the fabric of her beige slacks. He wasn't tan, dirty but pale still with big large blue eyes and long eye lashes. His hair was messy and tangled, a thick blond mess. By this boys age, Dale was hiding in Franky's laundry hamper in the basement when he and Sydney did business with other gangs. By this age, Dale had already broken four bones. By this age, Dale had already decided he wanted to be just like his brother and run FM. In the single moment that Dale observed the child he felt like his was looking in a mirror.

Dale stuttered before responding, leaning back in his chair. "Yeah, o-of course. Bring him in, what's his name?" Dale inquired, ruffling his hair.

"We don't know. He won't talk." Loveless said.

"How did we get him?" Dale asked, intrigued by the boy.

"We had been getting reports of minor theft, last night he broke into a house." She explained.

"Did he take anything?" Dale inquired.

"No. The family who called just came home to find a broken window and a boy sleeping in their bed." She answered.

"A regular Goldie Locks, huh?" Dale teased with a grin.

The boy merely scowled at Dale before sighing and walking in, seating himself in the chair by the wall.

"I don't think he likes you." Loveless said with a chuckle.

"All kids like me, that's why it's my name." Dale retorted with pursed lips due disappointment.

Sylvie had just gotten off her shift at the hospital and was looking rather worn out. Her blond curls were a mess pinned atop her head and her make-up was faded, some of it was smeared from tiredly wiping at her face throughout the remainder of her shift (graveyard: it's a killer). She had taken the time to change into her street clothes before leaving to meet Dale for an early lunch, but other than that she looked rather ragged.

And yet, she couldn't help but pull on a fatigued smile as she strode into the social services office where Dale worked and made her way for the back where his office was in particular.

She nodded and returned greetings from several her fiance's co-workers as she made her way to the back.

"Just keep an eye on him for today. I'll be back for him later." Loveless said before walking off again.

Dale looked over to the boy and smiled, trying again. "So, what's your name?" he asked.

The boy merely frowned, again, before adverting his gaze to the floor.

Dale pulled a face before trying again. "What sort of stuff do you like?"

Nothing still.

"Okay...Well, you wanna be my friend?" Dale asked, a hopeful smile.

The boy looked up at him from the chair before shaking his head no.

"No? Well why not?" Dale asked, his brows knit together in disappointment yet again.

By the time Sylvie had reached the back corner office, that which belonged to Dale, she noted that one of his co-workers, Kathryn Loveless, was making to exit. As the other woman left the office, Sylvie nodded in acknowledgement and gave a brief smile and hello before slipping into the doorway leading into the room. She gave a gentle knock at the door frame.

"Knock knock." She greeted before poking her head in with a grin.

"Hey gorgeous, come on in." Dale greeted with a smile. The boy shifted his gaze to Sylvie when she came the door but still said nothing, idly kicking his feet as he observed her from the corner of his eyes.

"Hey, sweetheart." Sylvie beamed upon seeing Dale. They'd been together for nearly seventeen years now - they'd been high school sweethearts - and still Sylvie couldn't help but feel a smile light up her face and her heart flutter in her chest whenever she saw him. She'd loved him from day one, and she loved him on and on afterwards.

Sylvie entered the room upon being invited in and promptly made her way over to Dale, stepping onto her tip-toes to peck a kiss at his cheek whilst resting a hand at hsi chest. "Having a good day?" She inquired before catching a glimpse of a certain little boy perched in a chair in his office. "Oh, am I interrupting something?" She asked.

"Oh no, Loveless is just having me watch him." Dale said with a nod. "Goldie Locks, will you tell Sylvie your name?" He asked, looking over to the boy again.

The boy shook his head quickly, tucking his legs underneath him on the chair; something like a turtle retreating into his shell.

"Oh, I see." Sylvie giggled when she saw the little boy bashfully tuck himself into hiding. She went ahead and stepped over to the chair and crouched down to see eye level with the boy. "It's alright, champ, there's no need to be embarrassed or anything, and if you don't want to tell me your name right now, that's alright too. I'm Sylvie, I'm Dale's fiance."

Sylvie tilted her head a bit and tried to peak at the boy's face. In truth, Sylvie was rather fond of children, so much so that mid-way through medical school, she'd opted to trade fields and went into pediatrics. However, even with all the heartfelt fondness she felt towards chlidren, her and Dale's attempts to conceive had been miserable at best.

The boy shifted his gaze between Sylvie and Dale before nodding bashfully and putting his hand out as though to shake hers; a nice to meet you.

"What? He wants to shake your hand?" Dale said with his brows furrowed. "Whyshe like you?" He asked with his lips pursed.

Sylvie laughed and gave an eyeroll at Dale's whining before reaching out to take the little boy's hand in her own, giving it a light shake, offering him a grin.

"It's nice to meet you, sweetie." She nodded.

After shaking Sylvie's hand he put his arms out, reaching out for Sylvie as though he wanted to be picked up.

Dale pursed his lips before crossing his arms, jealous at what a quick connection Sylvie seemed to be making with 'no name child.'

Sylvie couldn't help but allow a fond, motherly smile grow upon her face as she went ahead and outstretched her arms as well, ensnaring the little boy before hefting him up as she returned to an upright position. She placed him at her hip and readjusted him before leaning back and reaching out with one hand to brush at the little boy's hair. She proceeded to look over to Dale, noting his stance. She gave a giggle before looking to the little boy again.

"Do you think you could give Dale a handshake too, doll?" She asked.

"Do you think you could give Dale a handshake too, doll?" She asked.

-----

Dale perked up, hopeful that Sylvie could coax anything more out of him. But sure enough, the boy shook his head before hiding his face in Sylvie's shirt.

-----

"Alright, that's okay, champ." Sylvie crooned before looking to Dale. "He'll come around." She assured.

-----

Dale pursed his lips before rising from his desk. "I'll go ahead and get us lunch if you wanna watch him. What do you want?" He asked.

-----

"I'll just have whatever you're having." Sylvie said with a nod before going on ahead and turning around to take a seat on the chair where th elittle boy had been perched. As she sat herself down, she moved him to her lap.

-----

Dale went ahead and excused himself from the room before shuffling on out to head into the break room and get food. As soon as Dale left the room, the boy peeked up from Sylvie's shirt and cuped his hand over his mouth and her ear before whispering, "My name's Dean."

-----

Sylvie smiled upon hearing the little boy whisper into her ear and she pulled away to look down at him. She proceeded to cup her own hand and lean down to whisper into his ear. "It's nice to meet you, Dean." She returned teh whisper.

-----

Dean looked up at Sylvie curiously before smiling, a bright and boyish smile, the one Dale used to and sometimes still had. After a moment he tugged on Sylvie's sleeve before asking, "when can I go home?"

-----

Sylvie pulled a sight face and reached up to muss with Dean's hair a bit, trying to feign a smile.

"I'm not sure, Dean, Dale and Miss Kathryn are in charge of that." She said, nodding.

----

"Can you ask?" Dean asked.

-----

"We'll see, okay? But I think you should maybe ask for yourself." Sylvie replied.

-----

Dean quickly shook his head no.

-----

"Alright, you don't have to if you don't feel comfortable, but just think about it, okay?" Sylvie suggested, offering a smile down at Dean.

-----

"What happens to the other kids who come here?" Dean asked after a minute.

-----

"Well, sometimes they go home with their parents, after their parents promise to be good, of course, and sometimes others...well they go to other parents who will be good to them in the mean time." Sylvie explained, putting things as kind as possible.

-----

"Well...When's my mum coming?" Dean asked then, an innocently curious expression on his face.

-----

"I'm not sure, we'll hvae to ask Dale about that." Sylvie nodded. "But until then, would you like to have lunch with me and Dale?" She inquired.

-----

Dean nodded lightly in agreement, he was thin for a boy his age, it was likely that he had been starving,

-----

Alright, well, I'll make sure we get you something really yummy, okay?" Sylvie nodded.

Dale returned with food, an extra container for the boy as well. He didn't ask, but it went without saying that he was going to get something for him to eat.

"Sylvie, I got you the chicken salad, a pot pie for myself and a hamburger for Goldie Locks." Dale announced upon entry.

"Thank you, sweets." Sylvie grinned and looked up at Dale as he re-entered the office. "His name is Dean by the way, not Goldie Locks."
